Today I go to the doc and see if he will give me a shot in the knee to help heal tendonitis I got a week ago Saturday from a case of the "stupids". I did a 55 mile ride with some friends at a moderate pace through rollers and changed my gearing from 70 to 66 which was perfect for the ride except I jamed up a lot of rollers seated where with the 70 I would have stood. Lessons Learned!
Interesting, I think this is the first time I have heard of someone hurting their knees by lowering their gearing.
But I do get that if the gearing is too low, it is less appealing to get out of the seat to push a hill without slowing down some.
