I do a bit of a pressure test... When the tread area starts to look a little worn, with no pressure in the tire, you can feel how thick the rubber is by the resistance.

I recently replaced some pricey Vittorias that actually had the sidewall separating long before the tread was gone... kinda' ticked me off.
