When do you replace tires

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When I see the tire cords through the tread surface - or if the tire develops a bulge due to broken cords.

I had gotten into the habit of rotating my tires as I saw the flat spot come up on back. I have noted on the tires I use it has a wear indicator that appears when they get near time. Mostly, at that point, even though threads aren't showing I note the flat resistance tends to fail more.

I never rotate back to front.

I may buy a new tire for front and rotate front to rear though.

Hey 10...how many cuts do you consider too many? What's your criteria?

Sometimes come in with 9 cuts...Makes for too many patches in the tire.

One ride with a friend, he had a flat.

Counted the patches in his tire. He had 35 tire patches.

I carry 3/5 spare tubes and a spare tire.

Hmmmm...How do you patch your tires? Using a Park boot kit? I have a tire with less than 1000 miles on it at the moment that I'm going to toss because my patch gave...It's just where the tread ends and sidewall starts.

Cords showing on the rear usually or catastrophic casing damage. Front wheel gets a fresh tire and the old front goes to the back.

I replace when a cut causes a casing bulge or when they get worn and start to get a lot of small cuts and then flats. With the way roads are around here, I've never worn one down to the cords.

Noob here, ran my last rear to the cords, then had a hernia/bulge that developed on the last ride, which then blew out badly, necessitating a Call of Shame.

My current rear is worn quite square; I have the replacements (GP 4000s) on hand but I'm gonna ride it to the cords. But not beyond. I did get a rear flat recently and noted that the tire was QUITE thin. Livid' dangerously here!

How do you patch cuts? Are these the little ones that I see all over the surface of the tire or ones that go through to the tube? My current tires (Schwalbe One) have a lot of little cuts but so far no issues. They have about 1,300 miles so far. Plenty of tread left but worried the cuts could lead to issues but I see no practical way to do anything about them. I have some new ones I'm going to put on before some organized rides this month just to be safe.

I do a bit of a pressure test... When the tread area starts to look a little worn, with no pressure in the tire, you can feel how thick the rubber is by the resistance.

I recently replaced some pricey Vittorias that actually had the sidewall separating long before the tread was gone... kinda' ticked me off.

You know the GP4000s tires have a wear indicator, right??

Sorry. I can see how my post was misleading. My current tires are Specialized Roubaix Endurant Pro or something like that. Came with the bike. The GP-4000's are the on-deck replacements. The Spesh tires don't appear to have wear dots... or maybe I'm already through them, lol. I'll swap when I see cords or other serious imminent issues.... or have a catastrophic failure...

Partly, it's because it's mid-summer. Hot asphalt really wears tires, car or bike. I hate to put new tires on right now if I can avoid it. I've run some bald-ass tires on my truck before for a summer for just that reason. It's not like traction is a problem.

I rotate front to rear, when rear tire is showing threads the set is tossed. Sometimes I get a set I really like and will keep them until worn out.
