Nothing stupid about narrow tires for most road riding situations, people just like a more comfortable ride (me included).
The stem looks very proportional to the size of the frame, maybe rotate the bars slightly (or reposition the brake hoods) for less reach.
Oh yeah - the paint is magnificent.
How did the vintage ride go? You had to get many comments.
edit: just an observation - When my kids were born I rode less, but it was only solitaryexerciseamonstnature that got me through raising babies, even with a wonderful wife.
