My Cyclops back on the road after 21 years
There was a local vintage ride advertized so I thought I'd dig out my old road bike.
It was custom built for me by Mike Mulholland and built up my myself. I'll have to admit I don't remember anything about it, not even the price I paid for it. Paint was designed by me - what can I say, it was the fashion at the time.
I see it has a 8 speed Dura Ace Uniglide rear hub which Sheldon Brown says was only made in 1989 - which sounds about right. I pretty well stopped riding when my daughter was born in 93. Started MTBing a few years ago.
Changed the tires and tubes, oiled the chain and all the pivots and it seems to run flawless. The old tires were stupid - a 18 on the front and a 20 on the rear.
Had a ball on the ride but can't believe how long that stem is and how deep those bars are.

Very nice. Some fresh bar tape and it will look like new.

Cyclops top the list of my favorite vintage bicycles. The OP's is pretty darn nice, however; I am not a fan of the paint work. In fact, I am even thinking of having my Cyclops painted black, which, of course, would offer direct challenge to my Should I Paint My Bicycle feature article.
Some of the Bike Forums members will know that I have owned, built up and ridden lots of vintage road bicycles. What many might not know is that I actively compare the performance of one to the other. And...

...my Cyclops offers the best ride quality of anything else that I have owned, built and ridden. The best and so good that I upgraded it to modern Shimano ten speed components. Now I have both ride quality and user friendliness at my finger tips...

OP, great bike!

PAINT IT!? Here come the slings and arrows, Randy. Blue bikes generally don't do much for me. But that is a beautiful bike.
Would love to see a close up shot of that head badge sticker, Slash5. Very nice bike.

Love the Cyclops. I very much covet one of these bikes...specifically in the deep metallic purple paint favored for many examples, which really makes those decals pop.
A blue one, like Randy's, would be my second choice; I wouldn't be too likely to contemplate a repaint if that were my starting point.
Unfortunately for me, a nice 60-62cm Cyclops in my preferred paint scheme doesn't come up too often in Vancouver. One that did recently, I missed out on by a matter of hours.
Really impressed with the condition of yours, Slash5 - I guess that's the kind of preservation only long-term storage can achieve. And the Dura Ace 8 is just perfect to complement the classic styling of this bike.
What size? About a 60, give or take, I'd guess?

I agree this thing a beauty! I love the paint. Glad to hear your reconnecting with a old friend, I hope the riding continues.

Bikes: Bikes??? Thought this was social media?!?
Nothing stupid about narrow tires for most road riding situations, people just like a more comfortable ride (me included).
The stem looks very proportional to the size of the frame, maybe rotate the bars slightly (or reposition the brake hoods) for less reach.
Oh yeah - the paint is magnificent.
How did the vintage ride go? You had to get many comments.
edit: just an observation - When my kids were born I rode less, but it was only solitaryexerciseamonstnature that got me through raising babies, even with a wonderful wife.

Slash5 I vote beautiful too and would only make adjustments to the hoods/bar. What are the length of those cranks? They look longish.

you could always put some Soma Hwy one bars on it, though that might also require you to change them. Absolutely stunning cyclops.

Just measured it, it's 62cm. The old thought was the skinnier and higher pressure the tires the better. Now a wider tire with lower pressure and a larger contact patch is thought to roll with less resistance.
The ride was good but poorly attended - it was grey and drizzly all morning, cleared up into a perfect afternoon but it probably kept the people away. There were 3 Marinoni bikes, a Pinnarello and a few modern bikes.
A bike store in Guelph, Ontario, Canada called Backpeddling hosted the ride. If you are in Southern Ontario the store is worth a visit. I had never been there before but the story I got was that they have been there for years and only dealt in used bikes. They started selling a few lines of new bikes a few years ago.
They have a great collection of vintage bikes scattered through the store and sell vintage as well as new. Seem to have a good stock of stuff you don't see much like rigid forks including 1" threaded. They have lots of vintage components for sale (although prices seemed steep) and have bins and bins of take off cheap components like a bike coop has. The price of the vintage bikes didn't seem too bad but tax on top would be the killer.

Hey Keith, thanks for coming out to the ride! I had a great time and I was amazed when you showed up with your beautiful Cyclops, the first I had ever seen in person. Since then ive found 3 more cyclops and they are amazing bikes/ pieces of art in my opinion. I still think yours is the cleanest and nicest Cyclops ive ever seen. Here is a picture of my first cyclops mid build.
