The current, failing bottom bracket is a classic cups, ball bearings and loose spindle arrangement combining the Gitane's original Stronglight cups from c.1971 with a 113mm Stronglight track spindle that I used to replace the stock 118mm assymetrical spindle - this gets me the chainline I need if I wish to run the chainring on the outside position on the c.1971 Stronglight 93 crankset. Many years ago I shaved off the inside chainring ledge and countersunk the chainring bolt holes on the spider to make it all work nicely on a bike I had in the late 90s with little clearance.

I lean more toward fitting some sort of sealed unit into place for the set it and forget it effect. I've been using a sealed Miche Primato BB for about a decade on my Mercian with no issues, and I truly wish one of those would fit this bike and the Phil Wood mount rings ...
