With N. American production way up and Saudi Arabia refusing to cut back, gas is going to stay cheap for a while. Saudi Arabia wants to hurt Iran with cheap oil (over 60% of Iranian government funds come from oil exports). Meanwhile, the west wants to hurt Putin's Russia the same way (over 50% of Russia's funds come from oil exports). The last time this game was played, the Soviet Union entered history's trash heap.
It's a pity we aren't smart enough to institute a meaningful and ever-rising tax on gasoline now while it is cheap to pay for our eventual day of reckoning.
