Gas sure is cheap!

It's less than three dollars a gallon around here lately. Should I buy a SUV?

I been thinking about a Kona UTE instead. Just currently can't afford such a vehicle.

Somehow I sense a little sarcasm. Don't worry. The price will go up.

While you're at the dealership, can you get one for me too?

It's cheap if you are considering its pump price, but expensive if you are thinking of its impact on our planet.

Or something useful to put the gas into - such as an SUV.

The Canadian Harper government didn't see this one coming.
This will effect our economy that is greatly based on Alberta oil sands. When the price of a barrel of oil gets too low it is not cost effective to remove the oil from the sands. Unfortunately the impact will hurt all tax payers including poor saps like me that don't own a car.

You'll be looking for NOS or used- the Ute isn't in the current line-up (though the Minute is).

1. It's campaign season and Big Oil would rather have their puppets build their platforms on issues other than their profits.

2. IMO, the price of fuel was high enough for a long enough time to ingrain fuel economy into everyone's decision making matrix from here on out- it did for us, anyway .

All those prophets of doom and gloom who predicted that gas prices would double, triple, and quadruple have been wrong.

Thus far!! For myself I always hesitate to make predictions. I know petroleum products will someday be in short supply... it's not limitless. But no clue when it will happen.

Remember that there are very large reserves of oil hidden under the arctic ice. As more and more arctic ice is melting, it's inevitable that drilling for liquid gold will start sooner then later.
I don't think oil will run out anytime soon.

With N. American production way up and Saudi Arabia refusing to cut back, gas is going to stay cheap for a while. Saudi Arabia wants to hurt Iran with cheap oil (over 60% of Iranian government funds come from oil exports). Meanwhile, the west wants to hurt Putin's Russia the same way (over 50% of Russia's funds come from oil exports). The last time this game was played, the Soviet Union entered history's trash heap.

It's a pity we aren't smart enough to institute a meaningful and ever-rising tax on gasoline now while it is cheap to pay for our eventual day of reckoning.

I knew that I was waiting for some reason to cut the grass one last time. Still have to do it, but it will cost a bit less.

Agreed, this is nothing to celebrate, which is one of the points Noam Chomsky was making on Tuesday when he spoke at the U.N.:

"We are really playing with fire. Every drop of oil that is extracted from the ground is another [nail] in the coffin of the human species."

"We're coming pretty close to a precipice where we're going to destroy the conditions for decent existence, and unless most of that oil stays in the ground, where it has to be, the future for our grandchildren is not very bright. This is constantly neglected when you read the euphoria about the fracking and so on." The price of gasoline going down, Chosmky added, is a "catastrophe, not a time for euphoria."

And it's a boom town in Williston ND! Best to buy your RV before you drive there.

And who knows what will happen when we can thaw out Antarctica, and the Antarctica treaty expires allowing companies to rewrite the document more to their liking.

The last thing North Dakota wants is falling oil prices!

Nice troll you got going there Roody. The bad part is that if the lower fuel prices continue for a period of time, a number of people will do just that, in buying a less fuel efficient vehicle than if prices were much higher.

My worry is the long term consequences of oil fracking which is aiding in the lowering of fuel prices at the pump, it seems that the Midwest is starting to rival the Left Coast in the number of earthquakes that are occurring, as well as long term ground water concerns.
