No experience with those bikes, but for any offroad I ride a steel touring triple which works fine. But if I were to buy today for that, I would get a CX bike with appropriate tires and have at it. My touring has a 28x28 on 27" wheels low which goes anywhere. Would consider fitting "cross" aux brake levers if you intend any serious downhill. (I find I have to use the drops to get enough brake pressure on my canti brakes and my wrists get sore after a while). Maybe with discs it isn't such a big problem and you can get good performance on the hoods.
