Everyone rode much simpler shorts for the majority of road cycling history without worse results than we experience today. My centuries have all been ridden on $20-30 shorts without pain. Of course since that was a while ago, maybe they would cost twice that now. That's fair. And I admit to appreciating the $80-100 shorts that I own. Not for saddle comfort but more for other aesthetics. The emperor may need something pricier, but not everyone.
