This is not true. You can buy MIPS helmets in the US now, and those are significantly better than the CPSC minimum that's required by law in the US.
I'm riding with a POC Trabec Race MIPS now. However, since I bought it, both Bell and Giro have started making MIPS helmets and selling them in the US. I'm kind of thinking about a full face MIPS helmet now.
