Bicycle Helmet

Congrats on the new helmet. I've used the flip visor on mine on late afternoon practice rides when I didn't feel like I needed my sunglasses but wanted to shade my eyes from the setting sun.
The temps here are dropping from mid 90s down to mid-high 80s and they'll probably stay there by my next ride, which is Sat. morning to go see some electrci bikes on display and maybe take a bike maintenance class. It may be a while before I get another 90 degree helmet ventilation test.

The helmet is comfortable and the ventilation does a decent job. After using a Bell Sweep R for so many years, I wondered if it would be okay. Yesterday was the first day I used it and I could feel the air blowing through my hair on the top of my head. When I arrived, the hair on the top of my head was dry, not sweaty, of course the hair on the sides and the back of my head was sweaty where the liner is. I had a sweaty head with my old helmet too so no different. I am not disappointed at all. I am happy with it.
It took a little to get used to, if felt different when looking up while on the bike, but it settled in nicely. It seemed at first hat the helmet would lift a bit while bent over and tilting you head up to see the road, the back part of the helmet liner seemed to push causing the helmet to come up a bit, but it did't do that today. All in all I am very satisfied.

I got a 10 year old cheapo Giro. I'll probably trade it in for a Thousand helmet when they come out in January. I like the look.

Bikes: This list got too long: several ‘bents, an urban utility e-bike, and a dahon D7 that my daughter has absconded with.
I also went and got a Giro Sutton MIPS today. I had been wearing a Linen driving cap when I ride (a lot more comfortable than riding bareheaded) and decided to get a helmet and see if this one was comfortable enough. I have a Bern Brentwood; however, it is in a different city ( I live in Salt Lake and teach in Kansas).
The bern presses in odd places on my head and I really don't like it. I primarily wear it when it is so cold that I want the extra insulation, yes, I know, it i s setting a bad example for the teacher to not wear a helmet.
Thoughts on the Giro Sutton so far: first, the sizing chart on their website is way off, I went in thinking I would want a large, possibly an extra large. The Medium is the one that fit. Second, it seems comfortable and light; but it definitely holds sweat more than my driving cap does.
Of course I haven't tested the MIPS, and have no intention of doing so. It might just be a gimmick; but my wife was happier with my wearing a helmet and even happier with the idea that it might be safer than a normal helmet. . . Me, I think its a gimmick and sort of agree with the the Helmet.org assessment. However, for ten bucks extra, a gimmick that will never be tested anyways, but makes my wife happier . . . yea, I'll wear that.

I believe all helmets sold in the US comply with the same standards, so they are of equal safety. Fit and comfort vary by individual, so your best bet is to try them on in the store to make your choice. Buy from the store where you try them on. It is not nice to try them in the store and then order your choice online.
I'm riding with a POC Trabec Race MIPS now. However, since I bought it, both Bell and Giro have started making MIPS helmets and selling them in the US. I'm kind of thinking about a full face MIPS helmet now.

I agree on the ventilation. I ride slow on a huge cargo bike, so it shouldn't be an issue but this doesn't look like something that would be good for a road cyclist (putting aside the fact that it would look quite strange on the head of someone on a nice road bike).

I do find it amusing that people think that because cyclists wear helmets, that means that cycling must be dangerous. Car drivers have a ton of steel protecting their heads, driving must be pretty much suicidal by comparison.

Right. I was corrected in this thread.

I was kind of cranky about the CPSC standard being so stagnant, and I still think it could use some updating, but as long as the major manufacturers are making MIPS helmets and selling them through major sources in the US, I guess I'm OK with it.
I think if MIPS were required, we'd have $30 MIPS helmets instead of $60 to $200 now. But even that wouldn't be cheap enough for some people, especially when buying helmets for their kids, so I guess having a minimal standard for everyone, which allows Wally World to sell kiddie helmets that are really not bad considering the speeds that most kids ride at, and better helmets for those of us who ride at higher speeds, in traffic, and are willing to pay for it (I think most adults who want a good helmet are willing to pay $75 or so for a really good one) having two standards maybe isn't so bad.
We do need to raise awareness, however, that the old saw "Doesn't matter, all helmets conform to CPSC so there is no safety difference" is false. Even if there weren't a MIPS standard, saying that all helmets were the same because they all meet some minimum standard doesn't follow - it's like saying "all cars meet the minimum standard, so a Ford Escort is no safer than a Volvo."

Just a quick update on the Bern Allston. I have been using it for ten days now and absolutely love it. It is very comfortable and the headband prevents any sweat from running into my eyes or my sunglasses. It has been in the mid to upper 90's most of the past week with temps recorded on the road with my bicycle computer reaching into the low 100's and I have no issues with it being too hot. Hot is hot, the helmet hasn't added to it.
I feel more air actually blowing on the top of my head than with my "better ventilated" Bell Sweep R. The difference is probably more a result of air velocity rather than air volume though. The effect though is nice. I was slightly skeptical of the helmet, but am very happy with my purchase.
