Of the cyclocross bikes, the Specialized Tricross would also be similar.
There are a few CF Cyclocross bikes, but they tend to be expensive. Nashbar does sell a CF Cyclocross frame for $700. What can be recovered from your old bike? For $500 to $1000 more, you could build up a very nice bike.

There are a few Titanium Cross frames for around $1000.... Might be worth considering building up. There is another thread about hunting for a good Titanium Cyclocross frame.
Anyway, there are a lot of options.
I never considered building my own bike before, but since you bring up the frames, assuming the guy that hit me his insurance company don't need to see a receipt for a whole bike I might built it myself. I wounded how much weight I could put into the lower mounts of the ICAN frame
