1988 Trek 660 - appraisal?

Hello there,

I've been interested in this local Trek, but not sure what it's worth. The person selling is asking $500, but I still think that's too much. I've seen it, and rode it, seems like it's in great shape. The current owner doesn't know anything about the bearings being repacked or greased, which is a concern.

I'm not sure how original it is, however I do know the wheels, freewheel, stem, and fork aren't original.

Here is the link. Here is what he seller posted:

Up for sale is a 1988 Trek 660. This was a top of the line racing bike back in the day, and was made in the USA. Size 21".

The frame is made of Reynolds 531 and is in good condition, with a Tange TR chrome fork (for a more Italian look). It has a Shimano 600 Crankset with corresponding chainrings, and a Hatta bottom bracket. The front and rear derailleurs are both Shimano 600, as are the aero brakes and the brake levers. The rear cassette is Dura Ace. It has SR Road Champion bars with new Cinelli tape. As you can see, it's kind of a mash up of top of the line parts, put together to squeeze out the best performance possible.

Really not much wrong here. Very light scratches on the crankset, and one or two small paint chips. For some reason, the stem is hard to get really tight. I had it looked at by a bike shop, and they said it was fine to ride. If you plan on riding this a lot, a new stem will probably be needed.

Besides the frame, the most stand out part of this bike is the wheelset.

The front wheel is a Campagnolo Record hub laced to a Mavic Open 4 CD. The rear is also Record, but is laced to a Mavic MA40. Brand new Continental Ultra Sport tires. What's amazing is how little this bike has been raced. The rims have little brake wear, and except for a few spots (which have been covered up with new paint, namely the rear lug cluster), the paint is in absolutely stellar condition.

I'm selling this because, well, it doesn't fit me. Sad, but true. I'd love if it did. I've been wanting one of these old steel racers for a while, and when this popped up I bought it without really thinking about it, for way way to much money. I'd love if it could get to a good home.
