Obsession with mundane topics how they roll in Japan. Among the Japanese movies I've enjoyed watching recently:

Thermae Roma - A Roman bath architect is occasinally pulled through an underwater hole in time to modern Japan. Upon his return from each time trip, he uses ideas from Japanese bath houses and the like to design new Roman baths. At the end of the movie, the Emperor calls on him to build a bath to save the Empire.

Thermae Roma II - The equally absurd and hilarious sequel.

The Great Passage - Dictionary editors obsessively seeking out new words/terms and updating the dictionary. Actually more entertaining than it looks on the surface.

Library Wars - Young woman joins the Library Protection Police in the near future. They defend libraries against government forces seeking and destroying objectionable books.

And yeah, Yowamushi Pedal was a refreshing change from the more usual manga/anime topics. An ode to cycling and the sport of bicycle racing that any cyclist would appreciate. It'd be cool if it eventually inspired a real Tour De France style Inter-High race (there are Inter-High tournaments in other sports such as baseball). BTW, I think it's cute that one of the characters is being sponsored by a major manufacturer (Cannondale) - and he's just a supporting character.
