I suspect that you're right and this is the culprit. I don't remember the width of my rim offhand, but I know that it is less than 20mm (I'll measure it when I get home later). I did check before ordering the tires and they fit nicely into the rim width chart that I found on Sheldon Brown's website, but maybe it was on the skinny side...
