Unraveling has do do with direction of overlay, and not starting at the top or the bottom. If you plan it such that your grip tightens the tape, the adhesive strip is superfluous, and serves only to stick crap to your bars.
The adhesive strip on the Cinelli caleido tape did not leave crap on the bars, when I pulled it off. I was pretty happy about that.
