I just used a flat, coarse file and went around the circumference. It's all done by hand so I can't think of any more guidance to give. If you've used a file before you'll figure it out.

On a steel fork it might take 10-20 minutes if you are being careful. Aluminum is much softer and will go lot quicker but you have to be more careful.
