Is it possible to powder coat a threaded headset?

I'm currently building up an older frame with a 1" headtube for a threaded headset. My fool self didn't know enough about threaded headsets to know that my frame needs a 27.0mm crown race and I went an ordered a super gorj purple headset with a 26.4mm crown race by accident. I'm currently buying the correct headset but the colors available for JIS headsets are pretty monochromatic and dullsville, so I was hoping I could get bits of the new headset powder coated purple.

Is this viable?

The headset I'm getting is a Tange Levin CDS. I'm assuming you can't powder coat the bearings or the washers, but is it possible to powder coat the locknuts and externally visible bits? Some help would be fabulous.

Barring that, if anyone knows how to make a headset with a 26.4 crown race play nicely with headtube that wants a 27.0 crown race with like a shim or a heavy rock or a magical sword or the blood of my first born or whatever, that would be amazing.

By way of reference, this is the headset I ordered that apparently doesn't fit (a Tange Technoglide 1" Threaded Headset):

...and this is the headset I'm now purchasing (a Tange Levin CDS):

...and this is the same headset, disassembled:

One option, take the fork to a shop and have the crown race seat milled to 26.4
or
Compare the crown race on both the headsets you have, it's likely that the 27.0 will work with the purple headset.

No need to buy the new headset. But you can if you want to use the "right" crown race for your fork. It should work with the rest of your purple headset, no need to powder coat the black parts.

If you want to use the 26.4 crown race just file down the fork until it fits. I've done this before. It takes some care and you don't want to go too far. You also want to make sure you keep it relatively round. But it's not too hard.

Powder coat may not hold up well to a wrench, the way anodizing does, and masking the parts adequately to keep the coating out of the threads may be problematic. Cassave's and FastJake's suggestions may be better solutions for you.

Ah! Thank you, you're amazing. I was hoping something like that would work. Do you know of any guides to help me figure out how best to do that? I'd take it to my LBS, but I'm currently trying to force myself to build a bike up from scratch on my own so I can actually learn to do this.

I figured out that a powder coat wouldn't hold up from whenever I needed to adjust the locknut, so I was looking into DIY anodization, which, after doing some reading, sounded about as safe as a meth lab. So this has been a big help.

fork crown dace cutting die and the tool holder handles may be more than a home bike build up project will merit.

I just used a flat, coarse file and went around the circumference. It's all done by hand so I can't think of any more guidance to give. If you've used a file before you'll figure it out.

On a steel fork it might take 10-20 minutes if you are being careful. Aluminum is much softer and will go lot quicker but you have to be more careful.

+1 this. May as well get the head tube done at the same time (JIS = 30.0mm Ɵ; ISO = 30.2mm Ɵ)

or compare the crown race on both the headsets you have, it's likely that the 27.0 will work with the purple headset.
First check that your old crown race isn't worn; that part is always the first part to wear out on headsets.

Bikes: Road, mountain and track bikes and tandems.

I power coated an older threaded head set purple, to match the head tube, and it turned out nice. Just had to be careful when tightening down the top nut.

Just wanted to come back and say thank you to everyone for your help. This was super educating and super useful. I wound up getting my LBS to mill the fork, which apparently is an insanely easy thing that I simply never came across in my googling.

Also, after a long conversation with two LBS guys, you can powder coat certain headsets, just with significant care, and it helps if it's a sealed bearing headset. I also asked about anodizing and the quote I got was so high, I actually started laughing and immediately had to apologize.

THANKS FORUM. Y'ALL GREAT!
