Assume I know almost nothing about bikes, particularly classic ones. In fact, most of the jargon in the post is lost on me.

I currently have a 2010 Trek 2.1 that is more than enough road bike for me.

However, I am looking to replace a 15 year old Trek mountain bike as a commuter. My complaints are that it is has a big heavy frame, large mountain bike tires, a bit of rust, and tons of squeaks. Rather than putting close to $200 in to it for tires and a tuneup, I am looking for a new commuter.

My plan is to go to my local shops today and see what they have in the $400 range. The Trek 7.0 FX comes to mind, but I'll let everyone give me their sales pitch.

SO, how would this fit the bill? Ready to ride? Superior to the hybrids I am looking for? It looks fancy, but that isn't what I am necessarily looking for. I would toss some fenders in it. And, primarily I want something that is fun to ride to work.

Give me your sales pitch.
