You don't have much of a choice. By the time 36T was introduced XT was already at 10-speed. Deore was still at 9-speed, the Deore RD-M592 can handle 36T but it's only available in long.

You can experiment with RDs made for 34T but you'll need a total capacity of at least 40 teeth.
