Remove the Allen screw from the reverse side/end of the derailer mounting bolt and the bolt will spin free.

The Treks all have Campagnolo-style derailer hangers, so accept all modern derailers, including all Shimano direct-mounted derailers including the Light Action.
Shimano derailers having a mounting "claw" are not what you want to use, unless the claw is removable, which it usually is.
The 84 420 was supposed to come with Simplex derailleurs. Mine came with a Shimano 204/505 set. They were stock.

My 420 would have accepted any 'normal' derailleur.

Those 420Ls are pretty rare to come across. I think yours is the 4th one I know of. I'm sure there are MANY MANY more, it's just you don't see them.

AFAIK- they're the only Trek Mixte. One model, one year.
