Suntour do-simplex rdr...?

Been awhile since I've torn down a bike/and looking for info perhaps from someone who has this model. 84 Trek 420L. Is the stop on the do capeable of another nonfrench rdr? Don't want to yank it off (if a no go) Want to replace with a shimano Light action-so I would need to source a shimano band to accept the levers. Before I do all that/anyone have one of these Treks? TIA

Bikes: Cheltenham-Pedersen racer, Boulder F/S Paris-Roubaix, Varsity racer, '52 Christophe, '62 Continental, '92 Merckx, '75 Limongi, '76 Presto, '72 Gitane SC, '71 Schwinn SS, etc.

I assume the Trek has a Huret derailer.

Remove the Allen screw from the reverse side/end of the derailer mounting bolt and the bolt will spin free.

The Treks all have Campagnolo-style derailer hangers, so accept all modern derailers, including all Shimano direct-mounted derailers including the Light Action.
Shimano derailers having a mounting "claw" are not what you want to use, unless the claw is removable, which it usually is.

The 84 420 was supposed to come with Simplex derailleurs. Mine came with a Shimano 204/505 set. They were stock.

My 420 would have accepted any 'normal' derailleur.

Those 420Ls are pretty rare to come across. I think yours is the 4th one I know of. I'm sure there are MANY MANY more, it's just you don't see them.

AFAIK- they're the only Trek Mixte. One model, one year.

Ok-thanks....it is indeed a simplex dr with the helicomatic drive train. The rdr looks to have some kind of 'bands' to fit the stop. Great news as I have wheels/levers/and rdr from a univega nuovo sport-that may fill the bill. Only part then that I'll need is a 'shimano band that will accept the shift levers/they are sis from a brazed on bike. Will they fit a bolt on band if I can find a shimano branded one? Meanwhile I'm cleaning up the exsisting system. FD is a suntour-tho (triple-no reason not to keep) If I can't source the band-been working on the wheels to stay. Beeyach tho-not anodized and much mother polish consuming for asthetics

I've seen this- but not exactly sure how that Shimano braze-on works. I have some Shimano tri-color shifters that came on a band clamp. The shifters fit fine on "normal" braze ons. Other shifters I had did not seat on that band clamp.

So my theory is... based on this thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...l#post16339992

IF they're SIS shifters, my guess is they should work on most any band clamp that houses shifters that fit on to 'normal' bosses.

I've been wrong about my guesses.

I still have the wheels from my 420- the Maillard hubs to Weinmann rims. The bike was a whole lot of unridden- the rims are in such beautiful shape and look to be really nice. My secret plan is to lace those rims to some fancy pants hubs. I'm one of those people that's scared of the Helicomatic. I know there's people here, who I trust, that have been riding more miles on their Helicomatics than I've ever ridden- but I'm still not willing to tempt fate.

I'm pretty sure my shimano shifters will not fit the simplex banded bosses. Not really afraid of the heli/the rims are not anodized-and are a lot of work to clean up. Since I have a drive train off a univega/I'd just as soon go sis (besides the wheels are anodized and prettier Got the winter to plkay with it. I may be back with more questions-Thanks all.

I used "Nevr Dull" to shine up my alloy rims. It's a little work, but it's worth it.

I suppose I could sit down with the Mother's as well...

I actually shined up a derailleur last week:

Unfortunately, not a whole lot of pix left. Apparently ImageShack deletes the pix that haven't been opened in a year. Nevermind that they shrunk them and turned a bunch sideways and whatever else...

Some progress-the dropout did indeed accept the shimano light action. Besides a switch in wheels/put on sp's/changed bars and saddle. Coming along nicely

What might be a reasonable price to ask for this bike? I've repacked the crank-changed over handle bars-calipers and wheels. Only part missing to go sis is the shimano band on bosses (Ihave the levers) Just desperately needing the space right now. Wish I could keep really

Update: So I've had this Trek a year now (never did find the shimano band) and it just wasn't getting ridden. Found an old raleigh on cl and decided to scavage some parts to morph this further. Still need to cable the fd/on the granny until I do. So far as she sits....

I see the brake cable needs tweaking...
One more chance for this old girl

If you do need a clamp on mount for Shimano or similar shifter's in the future Origin 8 has one that came out recently.

Is it just my imagination- or is that gaudy and... not the least be graceful?

Bikes: (2) ti TiCycles, 2007 w/ triple and 2011 fixed, 1979 Peter Mooney, ~1983 Trek 420 now fixed and ~1973 Raleigh Carlton Competition gravel grinder

juls, what is the tubing on that 420? I have an '83 (men's) 420 I bought as a frame, used and repainted, so I never saw the tubing sticker. (It's not high end- weighs and feels too heavy - but it would be fun to know what it is.) Same fork, seatstays/caps and dropouts as best I can tell. It's my winter/rain/city fix gear and a very good bike for its place in life, the best I have ever had by a lot.

Why not simply go with SunTour bar cons? They'd be correct for this type of bike, or you could buy bar end pods and mount the existing indexed downtube shift levers on them? That would've been a standard solution for a 420/520/620/720 any way, right?

I would agree they are a bit clunky/gaudy looking. Another option would be just to buy a 6 speed set of Shimano DT shifters like these. In which case you could use the clamp and mount plates with most other Shimano shifters if you want.

Bikes: Too many Bicycles to list

Shimano did make a really nice looking clamp on SIS shifter mount, 600 Ultegra I think it is ( picked up a NOS one last year on the Bay for $20, Only because I have never seen another before ) I will post pics & Part numbers when I come across it in the shop.
