I used to think the same way until I started to commute on my Fuji with flat pedals. It took a little while to get used to regular pedals but I really enjoy it now even though I use clipless on my fixed gear and roadie bikes. And honestly, the only continuous noticeable draw back is that I start a little slower at red lights because I can't push/pull.

I have done it fixed too and I think it is a lot of fun, but this isn't on "go fast" bikes.
