San Antonio here. Commuting from San Marcos to San Antonio? Where are you working in San Antonio?
There are good rides north of the 1604 Loop in San Antonio. That's the edge of the Hill Country and you get gently rolling hills and county roads mostly with paved shoulders (albeit a low grade chunky asphalt or chipseal). City riding can be sketchy. Not many bike lanes or shoulders on the roads.
The heat in the summer is a beast, you need to be on the road by 7:00am. But the up side is riding in December and January.
Lifetime Fitness has group rides on Saturday mornings. 30-40-50 miles rides with an A-group, B-group and B-group no-drop rides. They're good rides that run north. The 50 mile A-group moves out with a purpose
