Coming to Texas
Hello all.
I'll be moving to Texas soon into San Antonio and will taking a job in San Marcos, Texas. How is San Antonio for cycling? I'd also like to commute to San Marcos at least part way. Are those parts of Texas kind to cycling and commuting?
And in San Antonio or around there, are there nice places to ride for longer weekend rides?
Are there local multi level bike clubs in Antonio that anyone would recommend?

The San Antonio Wheelmen have a very active club that I ride with when I visit San Antonio. Lots of rides and riders with a range of ability. The local racing scene is very active too. The area is pretty hilly with nice rural routes, especially to the west. The hills aren't typically very long but they can be pretty steep.
There seems to be a fair amount of commuting, but riding to San Marcos will require some creativity because of heavy traffic and narrow roads.
Riding around San Marcos is very nice, too. I have also ridden with a small shop ride in New Braunfels.

Welcome to Texas. San Antonio has several bike clubs. San Antonio Wheelmen have an active calendar. Mark W. has some good points. If you want to read about Texas bicycling visit my website Texbiker.net for news, events and experiences.

There are good rides north of the 1604 Loop in San Antonio. That's the edge of the Hill Country and you get gently rolling hills and county roads mostly with paved shoulders (albeit a low grade chunky asphalt or chipseal). City riding can be sketchy. Not many bike lanes or shoulders on the roads.
The heat in the summer is a beast, you need to be on the road by 7:00am. But the up side is riding in December and January.
Lifetime Fitness has group rides on Saturday mornings. 30-40-50 miles rides with an A-group, B-group and B-group no-drop rides. They're good rides that run north. The 50 mile A-group moves out with a purpose
