Sorry for being slow here. I only use my 300 these days to display current Speed and Cadence (to free up a little Garmin 800 screen space for other stuff). I didn't remember how to do that. And then I forgot that the question was asked. Yes, I forget a lot of things.

For me if I just wake up my Ant+ Wheel or Cadence sensor my 300 comes to life inquiring 'new ride'. The bottom/center button toggles yes/no and the top/right button selects the current answer (and will clear things out for a new ride, as best as I can tell). But I pretty much never do this as all I am after is realtime data on speed/cadence.
