Bontrager Trip 300 Computer Question

I just installed a Bontrager Trip 300 (Ant+ wireless - not yet GPS enabled) computer. All seems to be fine but I am confused about something.

According to the manual you tell the computer to 'start a new ride' (zero out memory and start the ride now) you press the 'bottom button' (possibly cycling through a couple of options - hard to tell from the manual).

On my (new) computer this does not work. What does work is to press and hold (3'ish seconds) the top button. Then you do get the simple dialog stated in the manual.

I'm curious if there are any other Bontrager 300 users out there. This seems most odd to me. The difference in how it really works and how it is defined to work does not look like kind of manual error that would 'slip through'. And if you look online at the manual (which, oddly enough, has no English version unlike the other models) the online version has the same 'error'.

Thanks.

Dave, thanks so much for posting this! I was going nuts (or moreso than usual) trying to figure out why following the manual wasn't working. I called the Trek store where I purchased the computer, and their immediate response was "Why don't you bring it in, and maybe we can help you. It's hard to figure it out over the phone." Sure. Happy to spend that hour since you don't want to make the effort to look anything up. Admittedly, I was a little cranky at that point.

I Googled and got your assessment--which worked like a charm. THANK YOU! You have made my day and all future rides much easier.

Liz, thanks for the feedback. I never did figure out if 'it was me' or what. Sounds like not me.

OTOH, I upgraded to a Garmin 800 at a good price. That has actually gone much better.

Thanks as this was really helpful. I just had this computer installed and now find that works both ways. If your computer is running, then pressing and holding the top button is the only way to activate the "no/yes" menu for a new ride. However, if the computer has been dormant for awhile and is basically shut down (it only shows the time), then the approach in the manual will work. That is, when the computer is shut down if you push the bottom button or move the wheel a couple of rotations, it will offer the "new ride?" menu. This manual is really poorly done and it certainly doesn't show your approach. We are all lucky you discovered it. Thanks,

Vic

same problem

Man, they get an F in communications. I had the same issue, didn't get it to work until I tried the fix listed here. Thank you, thank you! My other issue is the battery that came with the speed sensor was dead.

The first paragraph in the instructions should say the three icons in the top left indicate the presence of a speed, cadence, and heart monitor. YOu have to read the instructions with a magnifying glass to find that. The device seems to be good, the instructions not so good.

I see this works with a heart sensor. Anyone tried that yet?

Thanks for the info. I am having similar trouble. I can get to "new ride" and I can use the bottom button to toggle between "yes" and "no" but I can't figure out how to get it to take "yes". No matter which button I press or if I just let it sit in "yes", it doesn't reset the trip data. It's driving me crazy! Any suggestions?

To Bob - I synced my Wahoo HR monitor and it works great

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Sorry for being slow here. I only use my 300 these days to display current Speed and Cadence (to free up a little Garmin 800 screen space for other stuff). I didn't remember how to do that. And then I forgot that the question was asked. Yes, I forget a lot of things.

For me if I just wake up my Ant+ Wheel or Cadence sensor my 300 comes to life inquiring 'new ride'. The bottom/center button toggles yes/no and the top/right button selects the current answer (and will clear things out for a new ride, as best as I can tell). But I pretty much never do this as all I am after is realtime data on speed/cadence.

Bontrager 300

A related question: I just bought a B 300 trip computer but on opening noticed that it doesn't come with a magnet nor sensor. A bit surprised. Is this the way products are now made ?
When did suppliers start splitting all these separate components apart for separate sale?

IDK, I bought a German Ciclomaster in the 80's , only use the odometer function ,

trip reset got used when I saw a town 'distance to' .. sign, so as to answer my own "how much further is it?" Question .

@ LBS they may warrantee the one you have , if the chip in it is defective. Shop Manager's choice.

It kind of started whenever it was that standard interfaces (Ant+, Bluetooth, etc) began to appear. This is the norm for Ant+ (e.g., Bontrager 300) these days.

This is the second time something like this has happened in a couple of months, I start a new ride, all is going well, then check, and see this. 147km in 48 minutes, I wish, max speed and average speed, the same. Not happy

My Bontrager 300 has been in a box over a year, but IIRC it has an auto-shutoff. And if that isn't working, maybe it is disabled.

I know this is an old thread, but I bought my dad a bontrager 300 spending a lot more money because I wanted something that would just be accurate, and on his first trip out we went 10 miles and the speedometer reported 90-some miles.

Just wondering you continued to have this problem...it kinda seems like a terrible piece of junk right now. :-/

It's happened 4 times now, after the fourth time, I took it back to the Trek store, and the guy reset it for me, since then, I've had no issues with inaccurate readings, that was about a month ago.

But about 2 weeks ago, I went to put the Trip 300 on my handlebar, and the rubber strap broke, the guy at the LBS gave me a new one, but that could potentially be another problem down the line.

ShoreSue: Ever solve your problem? I recently purchased the Trip 300 and have the same issue. Any suggestions?

Hi mate, could you please give me more details? I seem to have exactly the same problem with it.

Cheers

Me again. Maybe somebody else will encounter this issue.

I called the service, they told me the computer is not serviceable, so I should just reset it. This is apparently done by removing the battery for 5 minutes.
The next ride went fine, no more errors.
