rearview mirror advocate, IMO wearing one takes a lot of surprise and anxiety out of close calls.

Don't forget its corollary:
Whenever a vehicle approaches from behind on a narrow, lightly travelled road, there will be a vehicle approaching from the front and all three of you will cross paths at the same moment. Confirmation bias has this one at nearly 100%.
That’s my justification
to wear a rearview mirror, my premier decision for safety. That's the most salient advice I give to the statement, "I'm afraid to ride in traffic."
