I don't really ever set goals, other than to just increase my riding over the previous year. Unfortunately for 2015 I missed the goal from 2014's total by about 140 miles. I did surpass 3,500 miles, though. Nearly 3,000 of those miles were transportational, directly replacing car use. I did increase my commuting miles over 2014, with a total of 2,679 miles just going to and from work.
Using the "Road Trip" app on my phone that I use to keep track of fuel and maintenance/repairs on our cars, I was able to easily calculate money saved as compared to before I started commuting.
For 2015, I drove my car 7,617 miles. Compare that to 2012 which was the last full year before I started bike commuting, in which I drove 14,619 miles. Gas that year averaged $3.50/gallon, whereas for 2015 it averaged $2.30/gallon (this is for premium 93 octane which my car requires). Going by my car's average MPG and 2015's average price, I saved almost $600 this year in fuel for my car alone. Or, by 2012's average, the figure is nearly $900 saved.
