I don't really ever set goals, other than to just increase my riding over the previous year. Unfortunately for 2015 I missed the goal from 2014's total by about 140 miles. I did surpass 3,500 miles, though. Nearly 3,000 of those miles were transportational, directly replacing car use. I did increase my commuting miles over 2014, with a total of 2,679 miles just going to and from work.
Using the "Road Trip" app on my phone that I use to keep track of fuel and maintenance/repairs on our cars, I was able to easily calculate money saved as compared to before I started commuting.
For 2015, I drove my car 7,617 miles. Compare that to 2012 which was the last full year before I started bike commuting, in which I drove 14,619 miles. Gas that year averaged $3.50/gallon, whereas for 2015 it averaged $2.30/gallon (this is for premium 93 octane which my car requires). Going by my car's average MPG and 2015's average price, I saved almost $600 this year in fuel for my car alone. Or, by 2012's average, the figure is nearly $900 saved.

I didn't set goals last year, in 2014 I had 522 commuting miles and didn't start riding from the beginning of the year. Missed couple of months.
2015 I had 946 miles, much more, as I rode a few times longer distances in summer.
For 2016, I want to set a goal of 1000 miles only commuting.
I think it will be reasonable and quite easy to get, depending on the weather conditions of course.
I only had 130 miles for recreative rides... will need to get these higher so I'll plan some bike tours in summer.

I did well this year. I was able to ride later into winter due to changing my hours at work for a few weeks until it gets lighter earlier in the evening also due to the weather not bringing us snow or ice until this past week. As soon as the roads become dry and clear I will be commuting to work again.

Final mileage tally for 2015:
Family minivan: 14984mi
"my" car (vw gti): 2102mi
My bike's cyclocomputer: 2132.7mi.
So just barely more miles on my bike(s) than my car, but in reality there were a few hundred more bike miles not tracked by the cyclocomputer, partly from forgetting to move the computer over to my old hardtail early in the year, but mostly from being lazy and not yet even moving the second mount from the old hardtail to the new 29er. I should do that before my next ride so my cyclocomputer will be accurate for 2016.
