They are paired with your iPhone and read by the cycling app. I use the Wahoo Tickr Heart Rate Monitor and the Wahoo Blue SC speed cadence sensor on my iPhone 5c but I use a different cycling app. In any case, you should have no issues with the Wahoo products. Wahoo provides a free cycling app (Wahoo Fitness app) that will use the sensors but the app leaves a lot to be desired. If you stay with your current cycling app, make sure that you download and install the Wahoo Utility on your phone. You will need to use this utility in order to upgrade the firmware for your sensors. I check for upgrades about once a month to see if there are any available.

There are other Bluetooth sensors from companies like Polar, Cateye and Topeak but since they have only been on the market for a short while, compared to Wahoo, I would go with the Wahoo sensors.
Hey this was very helpful, I appreciate the thorough information.
