This. Almost all bike shops sell only new bikes. Craigslist is full of reliable and affordable vintage mtb with rigid forks (not suspension forks) that are ideal for getting started on commuting, especially as mtb typically have easier gearing than road bikes. $300 is def. enough to get you a bike that would last a lifetime (except you will get bitten by the "N+1" bug and want to buy something more fancy) -- and leave plenty of extra budget for accessories and upgrades. Helmet, lights, rack, pump, seatbag+a few tools for flats, bike-shop tune-up if necessary, slick/city tires (knobbies are energy-sapping on asphalt), panniers if you want, etc.
You don't even have to go over to the C&V appraisal forum, you can drop craigslist links right here, and you will get opinions!
My commute is the opposite of yours: 5.5mi each way, 300ft gain in the morning. I think 500ft gain in only 2 mi would be challenging -- doable with the right gearing, but a challenge. I like uphill in the morning because I'm fortunate to have a shower and locker at work, so I can just skip a shower at home and let my employer pay the water bill! But like old's cool says, your way also has the advantage that you can just ride in office clothes (you'll need to protect your pant leg from the chain!), then sweat home and shower.
