Look for something similar to the first bike SJX426 posted. low gears ability to add a rack if the backpack thing doesnt work. WHy carry weight on your body especially uphill when you can let the bike carry it.
just do it try and learn what you like and dont like. it is 2 miles ..in LA!

I'd find a used quality vintage mountain bike for a commute like this. With slick tires, they make darn good commuters and the price is very reasonable. Used mtbs are an under appreciated part of the market and do not command a premium. You can pick up a high end used mtb in the heartland for well under $200; it will cost more in LA but certainly $300 or so should do it. You can show links to the bikes you find on the C&V appraisal forum with your requirements and you will get a lot of feedback.
You don't even have to go over to the C&V appraisal forum, you can drop craigslist links right here, and you will get opinions!
My commute is the opposite of yours: 5.5mi each way, 300ft gain in the morning. I think 500ft gain in only 2 mi would be challenging -- doable with the right gearing, but a challenge. I like uphill in the morning because I'm fortunate to have a shower and locker at work, so I can just skip a shower at home and let my employer pay the water bill! But like old's cool says, your way also has the advantage that you can just ride in office clothes (you'll need to protect your pant leg from the chain!), then sweat home and shower.
