I've broken, maybe 5 or so chains in my life without ripping off the derailleur, all before I transitioned to 9s chains, but perhaps it depends on exactly how it fails, and what you do as your bike is falling apart.

When I started re-using 9s pins, I also started marking them, so if one happened to fail, I'd know which one.l
