I often ride gravel trails so mine gets pretty dusty, thus cleaning the dust off of the outside of the pump is common. I have a tiny little piece of electrical tape over the hole in the chuck to keep dust out, so for me maintenance would be to replace that tape. A few times I have taken the pump rod out of the cylinder and wiped out any dust I could with a paper towel.
