The Counterbore in an aluminum chainring set the head, and nut of the chainring bolt within it, and that is Sided .

though the very long wearing Surly stainless steel chainrings are not as such..

your 34 as the granny goes on a triple long set of bolts ,
the 24 and larger goes on the 74mm BCD innermost bolt circle

It is possible to double a triple and use a toothless disk chainguard instead of the outer ring,

and say a 42T Middle and maybe a 26t bail out gear.
