What I'm looking for is an app that can not only track and record my route, but can also provide turn by turn directions from an uploaded GPX file. Is there such a beast?
I'd go with Cyclemeter. You can do the turn by turn yourself looking at the map. Cyclemeter is just great for everything else.

You can also run more than one app at a time. I don't believe it will cost you more in GPS power consumption. That way you can have the best of both.
