Need an iPhone App Recomendation
Apologies for beating this to death, but since my last post asking about a Garmin 1000, things have changed. I have a new iPhone, and Lifecase makes a nice case/battery that would make the phone fully useful for a long day on the bike.
What I'm looking for is an app that can not only track and record my route, but can also provide turn by turn directions from an uploaded GPX file. Is there such a beast?

MapMyRide will do turn by turn directions but you have to subscribe to the premium service. I think they charge per month. RideWithGPS I think does turn by turn. Not sure if they do a monthly or yearly subscription service. I've tried both those apps but don't use either of them but from what I hear they are pretty good apps, especially if turn by turn directions is a must for you. If you find one that has what you are looking for that has a yearly subscription, you may want to look into that app a bit further since yearly subscription apps are way cheaper than monthly subscriptions.

RideWithGPS also has turn by turn directions for premium members on their iPhone app. I prefer their technology to build and search routes.

I use CycleMeter Elite. It’s $4.99 per year.

Cyclemeter is great, but it doesn't do turn-by-turn. You can upload A GPX route to it so you can follow the route on a map, but it doesn't tell you to turn.

The folks at Abvio are working on it for a future release but are currently working to better the integration with Apple Watch.

Download OsmAnd. You can get the world map and five states for free or as many as you want for a small fee. This is a GPS program based on Open Streels. Next go into Map my ride and get your route converted to a Gpx file. Save it to a location on your computer where you can find it. Next, email to yourself and open on your phone. The pop up will ask you what app to use this file and one of your choices will be OsmAnd. This will give you voice activated turn by turn guidance.

Last year I used MapMyRide with my iPhone 4S. I never really enjoyed it. It often had trouble uploading a ride to the website upon completion. Auto pause didn't always auto resume. there were other things that I found clunky or annoying. Last week I discovered Ride with GPS as I was researching events to ride this summer. More than one had their routes laid out in Ride with GPS. That right there peaked my interest. I downloaded the app (I now have an iPhone 6S) and I registered on the website. I found it much easier to plan routes and enter data for multiple bikes. Right away I found the interface much more to my liking. I paid for a basic subscription to unlock the maintenance log and the turn-by-turn. Today I very easily planned a route on the site (using my desktop computer) then hopped in my car and drove the route with turn-by-turn. I'm sold. YMMV...

You can also run more than one app at a time. I don't believe it will cost you more in GPS power consumption. That way you can have the best of both.
