I quit wearing wool for outdoor sports in 1975. Heavy when wet, weak when wet, takes too long to dry. That was about the same time I also quit wearing cotton for outdoor sports. They're both nice for indoors and working in sheltered places though.
Things have moved on. Nothing heavy about a merino baselayer, wet or dry. Warm when wet and doesn't stink after a few hours like the synthetics. Cotton, I agree. Hopeless, because the fibres become waterlogged.
