I wasn't aware of MTB trails and much off road riding in NYC. At least the front suspension comes with lockouts so you can disable it when you don't need to use it - robs some of the power used to propel the bike if it didn't. My favorite old MTB (I own two very old MTBs) for riding the roads is a Cannondale SM800 circa 1993 which is very light and has no suspension. I wouldn't trade it for anything like the one you are considering. It is last year's model and discontinued so be very sure the store has the frame size you need. Don't accept one that is too small or too big if your size is no longer available.

thanks for the specs, you are right not much going on here in nyc for a full suspension, but I do plan on taking it with me to PA where I spend a lot of weekends, I can sure put it to some good use there. By the sound of it, its just not worth it considering the components and the price point on the bike.
