In doing some research,
some of which seemed authoritative to me, a good ratio seems to be around 1.6 or 1.7, 36/22 or 35/21.
Problem is that the crankarms are 130mm bcd, so the smallest chainring is 38T. So, unless the OP gets new cranks with a 110mm bcd, a larger cog will be a less expensive solution.
