I don't really do the celebrity hero worship thing, but Prince...
The one time I saw him live (Jam of the Year Tour, 95 or 6 I think, billed as "The Artist") was still the best show I've ever seen; I left that night all but ready to sell off my guitars and quit entirely. He'd slam one song into another, then segue into another in this epic medley and then be back in the first one before you even realized that's where you were headed the whole time. Went offstage in the middle of one song, came back with a bass and ripped off an epic Jimi-esque solo on it with full fuzz and wah, then traded the bass for a guitar and took it up another notch from there. It was unreal. Amazing. And somewhat sad too, as a young musician realizing -- with exactly zero uncertainty -- there was this whole other plane of ability that you could gaze on and feel and admire and love, but couldn't achieve. Ever.
That man could
play.

I've had to think about my answer, but the obvious answer is the right one. And you'll not find it on youtube; Prince was very protective of his music.
Anyway, listen to the Purple Rain album from start to finish. Not a song here, a song there. Buy the album and listen, start to finish.
You'll get an idea what all the fuss is about.
...My next post will be about bikes. hahahahaha
