It's really surprising how little is known about him personally, considering how long he was active. Unlike stars who head for New York or L.A. as soon as they make it, attend all the big parties and clubs, are always in the tabloids, Prince seemed to be a pretty "normal" guy. He still lived in MN where he grew up and we didn't see Tweets or Snapchat posts about him every day. He seemed to be a private man, all about his love of creating music and art not the fame it could bring him. I really do admire and respect him for that.
Prince did leave MN for a while in the 90s and 00s and came back to MN about 8 years ago. I never had the chance, but Prince would host parties at
Paisley Park. Here's a story about these event:
Prince serves pancakes, performs with 3rdEyeGirl at Paisley pajama party | Local Current Blog | The Current from Minnesota Public Radio He just had a party over the weekend, showed up to show a new guitar, but didn't perform. He wanted to let people know he was OK after the emergency landing of his plane last Friday... but he wasn't.
He was oddly private, yet like you said pretty "normal". Just on Saturday (record store day), he stopped in to the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis to buy some albums. I was at the Electric Fetus last year on record store day and it was packed "guts-to-butts". So, he didn't avoid crowds or public places, but yet he maintained a unique privacy. More than private, I would call him an enigma. A beautiful enigma.
Side story, Lisa (Mrs Toad) grew up near Prince's practice space. In junior high, she and her friends would hang out in the alley and listen to the early version of Prince and The Revolution. This was years before Purple Rain.
