It's difficult to believe that he actually caught other riders given that he was riding bear trap style ATB pedals in road shoes with cleats. He definitely wouldn't be pedaling standing, pedaling circles or applying too much pressure on the pedals, otherwise his feet would be constantly slipping off the pedals. Those serrated cages can do a nasty job on the shins and calves.
