It is my understanding that these bikes were originally only available in exchange for a certain number of cigarette carton box tops. So, you had to be an habitual smoker to get one. I can't help but picture a smoker with his new bike but not enough lung function to pedal it. That's why there are lots of them available in barely-used condition.
