If you put it in the wheel and pump it is almost the same as put a bed on it.
If you keep it outside the wheel after patching, then I probaly can avoid bed-step next time.
I've done it both ways, most of the time I put it back into the tire, but when those times I can't fix the tube without taking too much time I then install a new tube and fix the flatted tube at home and then that tube goes into the saddle bag...uninflated of course of the seat bag would look really odd. By the way, I did the same thing years ago when I used glue on patches as I do now using glueless patches.
