It's probably not your fault. Those pumps totally suck and the heads fall apart in no time. I ended up buying a Topeak Joe Blow Sport II for half the price and it works much better.
Managed to fix it. Took a bit of cursing, a 5 minute break so I could calm down, and then some sweat, but it is fixed. I love the pump and this really is the first issue I have had with it. Will just have to be a bit careful when putting the head on and lifting the lever.
On a side note, I will be commuting to work today since I can pump my tires up. Currently 90°F and no wind. Going geared for this one.
