based on my limited experience (2 frames, one rattle can, one automotive paint using preval sprayer)

seriously consider getting it powder coated if you can find, doing these right at home will cost more than you think

auto paint or rattle can? Auto paint is hugely more durable.

In either case you should have good mask....3M Medium Paint Project Respirator-6211PA1-A - The Home Depot

sand, and degrease frame

one coat of acid etch primer

one coat of sandable primer

sand

another coat of sandable primer if needed (if sanding went down to acid etch primer

sand

2 - 3 coats of color (watch recoat times and recoat within the recoat time frame)

2-3 coats of clear (watch recoat times and recoat within the recoat time frame)
