I wouldn't worry about cables, tires, and tubes. They aren't free but they are consumables and shouldn't be a factor in buying a bike which might last through several sets anyway.

Al frame, CF fork, Tiagra 10-speed .... and there probably aren't a lot of XXXXL frames on the market. Don't let him know you like it ... just scope it out and go "Hmmmm ... " a lot and tap stuff with a fingertip.

Bike retailed for like $1250 new, and the only drawback was the serviceable but heavy wheels .... same as any other bike pretty much.
